McOnsen Netpad O’2 (orgogliosamente spacciato per italiano, ma rebranding di un prodotto cinese) è un tablet Android dalle limitate capacità.

Sorvolando sul pessimo supporto fornito dal produttore (non hanno mai risposto ad una mia mail di richiesta di assistenza) sul loro sito mancano specifiche tecniche, manuali e download di software o firmware.

Per fortuna, la comunità di hacking attiva su questa famiglia di prodotti basati sul SoC WM8650 ha prodotto una buona ROM con pieno supporto all’Android Market.

Atheros-based Askey AR5BMB5 wireless miniPCI card drivers

Yesterday I had to fix an old Toshiba Equium laptop, that didn’t recognised its wireless NIC.

It was an Askey AR5BMB5 miniPCI card, based on AR2413A chipset.

You can download the correct driver here, under “Atheros” section:

Once installed, it shows up in device manager as “Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter”.
I had problems connecting to WPA2 protected networks, probably due to unsupported AES encryption.
Setting your router wireless security to “WPA/WPA2″ and “TKIP+AES” should solve the issue.

Add multi-touch capabilities to old Synaptics Touchpads

If you own an old laptop with Synaptics touchpad, you can enable multi-touch features just by updating your device driver!
Just use one of the following setup files supplied by HP:

Windows XP: sp47816.exe
Windows Vista/7: sp47815.exe

It works also on notebooks of different manifacturers, like my Dell Inspiron 640m and HP Compaq nx6110.

Should work for every device with this identifier:
ACPI\SYN1E18=”Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad”

Install the package, reboot you laptop and set your preferences in the control panel.

Dopo aver installato Windows 7 64bit sul mio portatile Dell Inspiron 640m, ho avuto qualche difficoltà a reperire il driver del lettore di memorie Ricoh. Un primo driver mi aveva installato parzialmente la periferica, lasciando una “Periferica di base” non installata nella finestra di gestione periferiche.

Oggi navigando nel sever FTP di HP alla ricerca dei driver per un Pavilion dv9585el ho trovato questo file: sp37809.exe (2,99MB). L’autoestraente in questione contiene il driver 3.52.02A rilasciato il 2007-11-10 che ha installato perfettamente il lettore di memorie Ricoh 5 in 1 sia sul portatile HP sia sul mio Dell.

OpenWrt su D-Link DSL-524T

Oggi scrivo per tutti gli sfortunati possessori di questo fantastico router ADSL, ebbene sì! Vi illustrerò come salvare gli € spesi per questo baracchino, cambiando il firmware (quello originale è pessimo e buggato) e risolvendo il problema del surriscaldamento che causa i frequenti blocchi riscontrati soprattutto in condizioni di alto carico di rete.

La procedura non richiede di aprire il router, ed è relativamente facile. Per installare OpenWrt bisognerà modificare le partizioni della flash, tramite il server FTP modificato del bootloader ADAM2. In caso voleste ripristinare il vecchio firmware, dovrete ripartizionare la flash coi valori originari (che io non mi sono segnato! ma sono facilmente individuabili nel programma CICLaMaB) per poi ricaricare l’immagine del firmware D-Link. OpenWrt Kamikaze Wi-Fi/Ethernet bridging with parprouted

I’ve got some spare ADM5120 boards with 1 ethernet port and 1 miniPCI slot.

I tried to build an Ethernet/Wi-Fi bridge box, but I were a little disappointed when i found out that the bridge package didn’t work with my Atheros AR5414 based miniPCI Wi-Fi card set in sta (managed) mode. Why? I don’t know!
Both eth0 and wlan0 enters promiscuous mode, but packets aren’t forwarded.

In old Whiterussian release, you just had to put your Wi-Fi interface in wet mode, bridge it with your ethernet interface(s) and everything worked out-of-the-box.
Unluky me… Kamikaze seems to have lost this wonderful option!

So, after an afternoon spent googling, I found parprouted: just what I needed.  The man page states: “parprouted is a daemon for transparent IP (Layer 3) proxy ARP bridging“. Seems complicated, uh?! Anyway, it just fakes ARP replies on both interfaces acting as a proxy for the hosts’ ARP request on both sides of the bridged lan. Just like a hacker’s man in the middle attack.

To install parprouted, you may have to rebuild and reflash your OpenWrt image if your router hasn’t opkg. That’s my case, since my board only has 2MB of flash and I removed it to free up space.
Anyway, I’ll explain both ways (rebuild or opkg), since it’s very simple.
